20x1.75 (40-406) "Herringbone" Tire for Aist, Desna, Salyut Bicycles
Narrow road-touring bicycle tire size 20x1.75 (ETRTO 40-406) with a classic "Herringbone" tread pattern is designed for installation on folding and road bicycles with 20-inch wheels. Optimally suited for riding on asphalt, dirt roads, and packed gravel. The directional "Herringbone" pattern guarantees excellent rolling on straightaways and effective water drainage when riding on wet roads.
What is the difference from other tires for 20-inch rims?
- Bead seat diameter (ISO/ETRTO 406 mm): This is the standard rim size for Soviet and modern folding bicycles (Desna, Aist, Salyut). Not to be confused with rare BMX rims or Soviet "Kama" bikes with a different bead seat diameter.
- Profile width (1.75" / 40 mm): This is the narrowest tire among 20-inch models (for comparison: 2.00 ā 54 mm, 2.125 ā 57 mm). Due to its moderate width, it has less weight and provides better rolling (easier to pedal).
What happens if you install 20x1.75 instead of a wider one (20x2.00 / 20x2.125)?
- Pros: The bike will be easier to ride, rolling on asphalt will increase, and guaranteed clearance under the fenders will appear (mud won't get stuck between the tire and the guard).
- Cons: Shock absorption on bumps and deep sand will slightly decrease compared to wide "fat" 2.125 tires.
- Important: The 1.75 tire fits perfectly on the standard narrow rims of "Aist" and "Desna" bicycles. Conversely (when a wide 2.125 is installed instead of 1.75), problems often arise ā the wide tire starts to rub against the chain, fork, or mudguards.
