UNF — UNF (Unified Fine Thread) is an American unified inch fine-pitch thread.
Unlike UNC (coarse pitch), UNF threads have a higher density of turns, which provides:
- Better resistance to loosening under vibration.
- Higher sealing capability (important for plugs).
- Precise adjustment during tightening.
1/2 — Nominal Diameter This is the external diameter of the thread, which is 1/2 inch. In the metric system, this is approximately 12.7 mm.
20 — Thread Pitch The number 20 indicates the number of threads per inch (TPI).
For a 1/2-inch diameter, a pitch of 20 is standard specifically for the "fine" (UNF) series. (For comparison: the "coarse" UNC series 1/2 has a pitch of 13 threads).
